Postgraduate Qualifications

We offer a range of postgraduate programmes at Honours, Postgraduate Diploma, Masters and Doctoral levels.

  • The school also offers degrees at the Masters and Doctoral levels by dissertation and thesis in the construction or property (real estate) disciplines.

Please note that the admission requirements are a guide. Meeting these requirements does not guarantee a place. Final selection is made subject to the availability of places, academic results and other entry requirements where applicable.

International students

  • Students whose prior degrees were not awarded by a South African university must submit a South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) evaluation certificate: this process can take up to three months to finalise. www.wits.ac.za/internationalstudents/
Postgraduate Diplomas

Postgraduate Diploma in Construction Management: (2-years part-time)

The Postgraduate Diploma is designed to increase the professional education of graduates in related disciplines such as Architectural studies, Construction studies, Civil Engineering, Property, Building, Quantity Surveying, and Construction Management.

The PGD Construction Management allows students to qualify to study for the Masters Programme (MSc Building).

Postgraduate Diploma in Property Development and Management (2-years part-time)

The PGDip PDM is offered in the fields of Facilities Management and Property Development and Management.

Requirements for application:
  • An advanced diploma in any built environment related discipline such as Architectural studies,
  • Construction studies, Civil engineering, Property, Building, Quantity Surveying, Construction Management OR,
  • A Bachelors or BTech degree in any built environment related discipline such as Architectural studies, Construction studies, Civil engineering, Property, Building, Quantity Surveying, Construction Management
  • Differently Qualified Applicants who fall outside of the normal admission requirements who can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university that they have a qualification or experiential or work based learning which has taken the learner to an equivalent level of qualification specified above may be considered for admission and/or for the recognition of prior accredited and/or prior experiential learning
  • A person other than a graduate who has in any other manner satisfied the Senate that s/he is so qualified.
Honours Degrees
Masters Degrees

The Masters Degrees (Building) are offered over 2-years of part-time study. To qualify to study a Masters Degree, the applicant needs to hold an honours degree in a related subject.

Research Degrees
Master of Science Quantity Surveying (1-year full-time)

The Master’s Degree in Quantity Surveying is a 1-year full-time degree. To qualify, applicants need an Honours in Quantity Surveying.

PhD - Doctor of Philosophy can take between 2-4 years, depending on whether a student studies full-time or part-time. It is offered in the fields of Building, Real Estate, Construction Management, Construction Project Management and Quantity Surveying.
