School of Business Sciences (SBS)
About the School
Multi-disciplinary teaching and research
The School of Business Sciences takes a multi-disciplinary approach to teaching and research, keeping us closely attuned to South Africa's changing business landscape. This thinking shapes everything we do, and it's brought to life by our academics and support staff.
Our vision
The school of disciplinary specialism in the business sciences develops ethical leaders who build African enterprise, lead digital transformation in their fields, and are recognised globally as among the best in their professions.
“Our graduates lead with disciplinary expertise, in organisations and in enterprises of their own.”
Our brand promise across everything SBS does: Lead with Expertise.
Study with us
Our four disciplines each offer a full academic pathway, from undergraduate BCom study through to Honours, Master's, and Doctoral research. Part-time study options are also available. Programmes combine theory and application, with students learning from faculty engaged in impactful research.
Our research
Our research shapes African business thinking, from sustainability and entrepreneurship to risk and technology, through a dedicated research centre, independent research groups, and a partnership with INSETA, producing open-access insurance textbooks. Our work informs what we teach and connects students to researchers actively solving business problems.
SBS short courses
SBS short courses offer flexible, part-time learning opportunities for individuals who want to deepen their knowledge in specialised areas of the business management sciences. Unlike our part-time degree programmes, these focused modules are designed to develop specific skills and insights, helping participants expand their expertise, respond to changing industry needs and support their continued professional development. We offer our short courses through Wits Plus.
SBS student experience
At the SBS, the student experience extends beyond the classroom. From orientation and academic support to industry engagement, career development and postgraduate opportunities, students are guided through meaningful pathways at every stage of their studies. This journey helps them build knowledge, confidence and professional connections while preparing for successful careers and lifelong learning.
