Renewable Energy Markets in South Africa: Exploring the Policy and Legal Landscape for Embedded Generation - Seminar 2 Community Grids

The Claude Leon Chair in Earth Justice and Stewardship, Professor Tracy-Lynn Field, invites you to an online seminar series exploring the varying policy and legal landscapes for promoting embedded renewable energy generation in the residential, community, education, municipal, and commercial and industrial markets.

While much attention has been focused on South Africa’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme, the embedded generation market has boomed as South Africans search for more reliable, cleaner solutions for energy security.

In the seminar series, leaders and first-movers will discuss the models they are pursuing to advance the uptake of renewable energy in different market segments, and the policy, legal and regulatory opportunities and constraints they have faced along the way.

The second seminar explored how community grids can be genuinely enabling and advance energy justice, with reference to technologies, governance arrangements, and financing.

  • Professor Willie Cronje, School of Electrical and Information Engineering, University of the Witwatersrand (Pecogrid Power Project)
  • Professor Dan van der Horst, Personal Chair of Energy, Environment and Society, University of Edinburgh (Community Grids in Scotland)
