Extra Time and Other Concessions

Applications for extra time and other concessions for tests and exams are facilitated through the Disability Rights Unit (DRU) and Campus Health and Wellness Centre (CHWC), where only students with documented disabilities are eligible to apply, with final approval done by the Faculty.

All first-time applicants must comply with the University's policies and procedures on extra time and concessions and be assessed by the University's extra time and concessions team, regardless of any previously granted extra time. Once extra time and concessions have been granted by the Faculty, a student will receive a Faculty letter indicating any approved extra time and concessions.

Returning Wits students with previously faculty-approved extra time and concessions indicating "rest of university career" must register with DRU every year to acquire a renewal extra time and concessions letter for the current year of study (proof of the original faculty approval letter is required).

The closing dates for extra time applications are indicated below, unless in the case of unforeseen temporary or permanent disabilities.

Closing Date for Applications

To ensure that all students receive their faculty-approved extra time and other concessions before each exam session begins, the closing date for applications is indicated below:

Semester 1 (June examination session): 30 April 2024

Semester 2 (November examination session): 30 August 2024

Please Note: Extra time and concession applications can take a minimum of 5 to 10 working days for Faculty approval.

How to Apply for Extra Time and Concessions

Students requiring extra time and concessions must follow one of the procedures below. For any queries regarding extra time and concessions, please contact Mr Duncan Yates at: duncan.yates@wits.ac.za.

New Application for Extra Time and Other Concessions for Tests & Exams

Procedure 1

  1. Students who wish to apply for extra time and other concessions must first register with the Disability Rights Unit (DRU) via the Wits Student Self-Service portal (DRU registration instructions can be found under Student Registration on the DRU homepage). After the DRU registration has been approved, an email will be sent to the student with step-by-step instructions on how to apply for extra time and concessions.
  2. After submitting the application and uploading the medical document indicating recommendations for extra time and concessions,  students must send an email to Mr Duncan Yates at: duncan.yates@wits.ac.za, requesting assistance with the extra time application, also attaching their most recent medical or psycho-educational report with recommendations.
  3. A DRU referral and recommendation letter, along with reports, will be sent to Campus Health and Wellness Centre (CHWC).
  4. CHWC will email students an extra time and concessions application form, which must be completed and emailed back to CHWC. CHWC will then consider the application and provide recommendations to the relevant Faculty for final approval.
  5. The Faculty will communicate the outcome to students via email, with an official faculty letter indicating any approved extra time and concessions. This faculty letter should then be emailed to DRU's Test and Exams Coordinator, Mr Alfred Tlou, at: alfred.tlou@wits.ac.za.
  6. Students who have received approved extra time and other concessions must inform their lecturer and course coordinator at least 1 week in advance of any online tests/exams/assessments in order to receive the relevant concessions. Additionally, students must send the faculty letter indicating the approved extra time and concessions to the lecturer and course coordinator as proof.
Renewal of Wits Approved Extra Time and Other Concessions for Tests & Exams

Procedure 2

  1. Returning Wits students who received a faculty-approved extra time and concessions letter which states "rest of university career", must register with DRU for the current year via the Wits Student Self-Service portal (DRU registration instructions can be found under Student Registration on the DRU homepage). If the letter does not state "rest of university career" explicitly, please follow Procedure 1 above.
  2. After the DRU registration is approved for the current year, students must send an email requesting the renewal of extra time and concessions and attach the original faculty letter indicating “rest of university career”, to Mr Alfred Tlou at: alfred.tlou@wits.ac.za
  3. DRU will then formally send a request to the Faculty for an updated extra time and concessions letter for the current year. This request will include a DRU letter along with the original faculty letter.
  4. After approval from the Faculty, the updated letter indicating the extra time and concessions for the current year will be sent to the student.
  5. Students who have received approved extra time and other concessions must inform their lecturer and course coordinator at least one week before any online tests/exams/assessments to receive the relevant concessions. Additionally, students must send the faculty letter indicating the approved extra time and concessions to the lecturer and course coordinator as proof.
