Divisions: Paediatric Surgery - Johannesburg Hospital

The unit consists of a General Paediatric Surgical Ward of 20 official beds with High Care beds in ward cubicles. The ward provides beds for the following surgical disciplines:

  1. Paediatric/General Surgery
  2. Trauma cases
  3. Burns
  4. Urology
  5. Otorhinolaryngology
  6. Neurosurgery
  7. Maxillofacial Surgery and
  8. Gynaecology

Patients are admitted under the care of these disciplines in an age range of birth to sixteen years. An ambulatory (day case) service is also managed by this ward s staff.

Workload:

This unit provides a 24 hr, 365 day service.

  • General Paediatric Surgery Admissions: 100-150 per month
  • Procedures: approximately 130 per month
  • Out-patients: approximately 200 per month
  • Intensive Care beds are provided by a combined Paediatric/Paediatric Surgery Intensive Care Unit
  • Emergency/Casualty services: The division provides a twenty-four hour ward cover to all Paediatric
    General surgery as well as to Paediatric Casualty and the Trauma Unit
  • The Unit covers all Paediatric Surgery problems from birth to sixteen years, including: Paediatric Urology, Paediatric Thoracic Surgery, Paediatric Neurosurgery (shunt and myelomeningocoeles) and Oncology.
  • The Unit is also responsible for Paediatric Renal Transplantation; Access for peritoneal dialysis and venous
    conduits of various types. All major and minor procedures are done or supervised by consultant staff
