Postgraduate Programmes in Nursing

The Wits Department of Nursing Education is situated in the heart of Johannesburg, surrounded by some of the busiest and best hospitals, clinics, and medical centres.

Master of Science in Nursing (MSc Nursing) by dissertation

Candidates registering for this course are required to conduct a line of research under the guidance of a supervisor and submit a dissertation based on that research. This course is available to candidates who hold a Baccalaureate in Nursing.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

A candidate reading for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy is required to engage in and complete an original research for at least two years under the guidance of a supervisor, and submit a thesis.

Admission Requirements

Any of the following may be admitted as a candidate for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy:

  • The holder of a Master's degree in Nursing
  • By special permission of the Senate, a graduate of any other university or by means of an assessment mode determined by the Senate.
  • It is further a requirement that you must have published at least one research article in an accredited journal.
