Community Health
Teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses, trains registrars and medical students in community health; conducts research on health service delivery, and supports health authorities in the planning, managing, delivery, and monitoring of health services at different levels.
Epidemiology and Biostatistics
Builds capacity for understanding the distribution of diseases and associated risk factors and the analysis of data arising from these. The department teaches undergraduate and postgraduate students, conducts scientific research providing statistical support to academics and students.
The IS4NCDs project (Implementation Science for Non-Communicable Diseases) addresses the urgent need to build a health and research workforce in Southern Africa that is skilled in implementation science (IS) to better prevent and manage the growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Health and Society
Staff based in the Division of Health and Society conduct research in the areas of social and behaviour change, gender equity, and other social determinants of health. All research is designed to inform policies and programs or evaluate the effectiveness of interventions.
Maternal and Child Health
As a multidisciplinary group of academic staff, reflecting expertise in medical science, epidemiology, public health, child health, behavioural science, gender, HIV and TB, the programme supports the South African Government to roll out national programmes.
Demography and Population Health
Provides professional education and training, conducts research focusing on public and reproductive health and acts as a forum for policy-makers, programme managers, and scholars contributing to population, health, and development policies in Africa.
Occupational Health
Involved in occupational and environmental health, including occupational hygiene and exposure science. It has strong ties with the National Institute for Occupational Health, a multidisciplinary institute with extensive international links, and is active in the development of occupational health professionals and practitioners.
