The staff members’ research interests and niches vary and span across many disciplines of Dentistry and they are mostly in the following areas: -

  • Shade matching in Dentistry

  • Maxillofacial and Oral surgery

Collaborations

Staff members in the department have collaborated with departments within the SOHS and outside. Below are some of the collaborating departments and institutions: -

  • Department of Oral Rehabilitation (Prosthodontics)
  • Department of Community Dentistry
  • School of Education
  • Department of Community Oral Health, University of the Western Cape
  • University of Michigan (USA)

Presentations and Workshops

  • Staff members in the department have presented posters and oral presentations at local and international conferences.
  • The department held numerous workshops for the public sector Dentists to upskill them, mainly on Endodontics. We also organised a workshop for the foreign qualified dentists as they were preparing for their HPCSA Board 
  • The staff members are also holding positions in the research organisations such as the International Association of Dental Research (IADR).
  • Some of the staff members are opinion leaders in their fields e.g in Endodontics.

Reviewers for journals

Some staff members in the department are or have been reviewers in the South African Dental Journal, the International Journal of Prosthodontics and the Journal of Prosthodontics amongst others
