The SA Journal on Human Rights and NRF SARChI Research Chair in Equality, Law and Social Justice at the Wits School of Law invite you to this virtual conference

The Covid-19 Pandemic, Inequality and Human Rights in South Africa

The conference will take place on 25th and 26th February.

Although it is often said that the coronavirus does not discriminate in whom it infects, it is becoming clear that the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, and of measures to contain it, track well-worn pathways of inequality and disadvantage across the world. As the Covid-19 pandemic marches across South Africa and the globe; economies shut down, political, social and economic inequalities are thrown into sharp relief as people lose income and livelihoods, hunger and food insecurity worsens, and education becomes a resource only for those with access.

It is clear that the pandemic has reflected, reinforced and deepened inequalities and resulted in human rights violations within and across different groups.

How do we understand these inequalities and rights violations? What opportunities and threats are created by the epidemic and the state’s responses to it? What is the role of law and human rights in addressing and mitigating its effects and finding ways to ‘build back better’? And what does the pandemic reveal about our past and our future?

Legal and human rights scholars and practitioners will tackle these and other questions on Covid 19, human rights and inequality at this two-day conference.

Date: 25-26 February 2021 | Time: 10.00-16.00 | Platform: Online (Zoom): A link and password will be emailed to you the day before the conference.
