About Us
ENERGISE – the African-German Centre for Just Energy Transition (ENabling a Just Energy Transition through Renewable Energy, Governance, and Innovative Sustainable Entrepreneurship) – brings together African and German institutions to address the complex challenges of the energy transition.
ENERGISE that brings together expertise in engineering, energy policy and entrepreneurship through interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research. The Centre connects research with postgraduate education, Living Labs, innovation and stakeholder engagement, creating opportunities to bridge research, innovation and implementation in real-world South African contexts.
Through collaboration across disciplines, institutions and sectors, ENERGISE supports knowledge exchange and builds lasting partnerships between researchers, students, policymakers, industry and communities. The Centre contributes to developing the knowledge, skills and solutions needed for a more sustainable and inclusive energy future.
ENERGISE is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) and the German Federal Foreign Office (AA) through the DAAD African Excellence Programme.
Aims & Objectives
ENERGISE aims to strengthen the foundations for a Just Energy Transition by developing people, knowledge, partnerships and practical solutions.
The Centre's objectives are to:
- Develop future leaders through postgraduate education, short courses, student initiatives and academic exchange.
- Advance knowledge through collaborative interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research.
- Test and demonstrate solutions through Living Labs and real-world experimentation.
- Support innovation and entrepreneurship through sustainable business models and student-led initiatives.
- Strengthen institutional capacity and partnerships across Africa and Germany.
- Translate knowledge into impact through engagement with government, industry, communities and other stakeholders.
