Exploring the role of heritage in contemporary societies

Overview

The Honours degree in Heritage is undertaken by coursework and a research essay. Students are required to complete all four coursework units and submit a long essay of 10,000 words. The degree invites students to think about the politics of current heritage practices and debates. It questions what constitutes forms of knowledge and public memory. Courses within this degree engage with questions of public art, exhibitions, festivals, monuments, museums, collections, digitisation and archives. The degree is also foundational to further studies in fields such as museum studies, cultural policy and heritage management, archives, curatorship and reparations.

Curriculum

Requirements: 4 courses and a long essay
(i) Core course - Public Culture
(ii) 3 electives of own choice - wits.ac.za/wsoa/cpavc/postgraduate/

Entry Requirements

 

  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent with 65% course mark aggregate in a third year major.
  • At least an upper second class pass in the final undergraduate course in History of Art or a related field

  • Applications are handled centrally by the Student Enrolment Centre (SEnC).   • Applicants can monitor the progress of their applications via the Self Service Portal.
  • Selections for programmes that have a limited intake but attract a large number of applications may only finalise the application at the end of the application cycle.
