The Division of Nephrology of the University of the Witwatersrand is based at 4 sites: Chris Hani Baragwanath (CHB), Helen Joseph (HJ) and Johannesburg Hospitals (JH) and Donald Gordon Medical Centre (DGMC); each institution’s nephrology department undertakes clinical service, teaching and research activities. DGMC is accredited by HPCSA for 6 months of training time and the fellows thereafter rotate through the other nephrology training sites.

The Division of Nephrology in the Department of Internal Medicine exists to provide a service for patients suffering from kidney diseases. This therefore includes management of acute kidney injury, prevention of kidney and cardiovascular disease, the management of patients with established chronic kidney disease (CKD) and those with end stage kidney failure requiring dialysis and transplantation. We also provide a teaching and training facility for medical students, nursing students, registrars in internal medicine, nephrology subspecialty training for Cert Neph (CMSA) specialists, nephrology subspecialty training for professional nurses and international students.

We offer training and outreach support to provinces and regions with a shortage of nephrologists. The division is responsible for appropriate research in the areas of kidney and cardiovascular disease in order to enable us to be a center of excellence in nephrology.
