Nomfundo Ngcobo

Nomfundo has been a member of Wits Convocation EXCO since 2018. In addition to her overall active participation, other contributions she has made include, raising circa R11m for #FeesMustFall through networks and partnerships in 2021.

Her commitment to serving in Wits’ structures began when she was elected into the Education and Readmissions Portfolio of the SRC, followed by her ex-officio seat on the Wits Universities’ Council from 2002 to 2004.

Nomfundo is an admitted attorney, and was a senior corporate finance professional until 2018. She evolved from corporate governance, risk management, commercial legal, corporate finance and is now a Senior Strategist at the IDC, focusing on strategic planning / design, strategy implementation and evaluation.

Wits University continues to grapple with funding and transformation issues (layered in gender, class and curriculum) all while striving for global excellence. Nomfundo’s passion for these three areas piqued her interest and led to her election. She intends to add value by contributing her knowledge and experience in serving the institution, advancing the interest of the university populace whilst safeguarding the interest of Convocation. Preservation of the Wits legacy and growing a new centennial story makes it an interesting time to be involved with the size and quality of the institution. Author Dambisa Moyo speaks of an active citizenry strengthening democracy and the rule of law. Nomfundo holds that quality higher education is critical in the growth of the middle class and an increased engaged citizenry as it is critical in advancing our democracy, social mobility and equitable and inclusive economic participation. She believes that the experience gathered serving on various boards has prepared her to positively contribute to the successful governance of Convocation. She is inspired by Theodore Roosevelt’s “Man in the Arena” as she continues to be of service to Wits University Convocation.

A mother of 2, a hiker and a runner, she successfully summitted Mount Kilimanjaro in 2018 and in 2019 attempted the Mont Blanc summit.
