Jonathan Witt

Dr Jonathan Witt is a medical doctor and Fellow of the College of Anaesthetists practicing as a specialist anaesthesiologist.

Jonathan holds four degrees, three of which are from the University of the Witwatersrand including a Bachelor of Arts Honours, a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery, and a Master of Medicine. He is a former President of the Medical Students' Council, the oldest student representative body in South Africa, a former Chairman of the Resuscitation Council of Southern Africa, and is a longstanding member of the Wits Convocation Exco.

Dr Witt has worked and consulted extensively across the healthcare industry in training, pre-hospital emergency medicine, and youth enrichment programmes. His philanthropic pursuits in this arena led to him being awarded the title of Commander of the Order of St John by HRH Queen Elizabeth II. Jonathan is also well known for his political commentary which is regularly featured on various media platforms, and which has earned him a considerable social media following.

Dr Witt’s close personal relationship with Wits means that he has a good understanding of the university environment both as student and as a current member of staff. He believes that tertiary education is undergoing a transformative period through which honest reflection and tough decisions will need to be made if this sector is to survive in a meaningful way. Jonathan considers his position on the Convocation Executive to be important in elevating the voices and opinions of our graduates who are often poorly represented in discussion, most especially in issues du jour.

Outside of his work and voluntary commitments, Dr Witt resides in Johannesburg with his wife, daughter, and two English bulldogs.
