Dr Steven Nathan Honored by American Lung Association in Virginia

Dr Steven Nathan (MBBCh 1981), Medical Director of Inova s Advanced Lung Disease and Transplant Program, was awarded the American Lung Association of Virginia s highest honor in June 2009.

The Douglas Southall Freeman award was presented to Nathan at the association s meeting in Williamsburg, VA. It is given to a Virginian who demonstrates a commitment to preventing lung disease and promoting lung health.

Nathan was recognized for his professional expertise as well as for his compassion, knowledge and sense of humor ? all of which have earned him the trust of his patients.

Nathan was nominated for the award by a former patient, Lolly Gilmore of Midlothian, VA, who underwent a successful lung transplant in 1999. Lolly credited Nathan for the "opportunity to see my grandchild grow and to travel to places around the world I never thought I d see."

Nathan is actively involved in groundbreaking translational research into idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), a progressive form of lung scarring which has a high mortality and for which there are no effective treatments. He also works collaboratively with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to further study of various forms of advanced lung disease. His work is widely published in peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation.
