BA Honours in Digital Arts

Specialist Streams in Animation, Game Design and Interactive Media

This one year full-time (or two-year part-time) programme is ideally suited for students with a three-year degree who wish to prepare for entry to a Masters programme in Digital Arts, or for those who simply wish to add a year of Digital Media expertise to their existing degree. The Digital Arts Honours programme will introduce you to the key debates in current theory together with practice courses in your chosen field. You will also get the opportunity to take your interests further in a supervised research project.

There are three options for the BA Honours in Digital Arts. This degree can be done in the specialist focus areas of animation, interactive media or game design. You may also choose to combine subjects from the different streams, but this must be done in close consultation with supervisors in the Digital Arts Division. 

Animation

The Digital Arts Honours programme in the Animation stream consists of FIVE courses:

  • A compulsory theoretical core course: Digital Art Theory.
  • A compulsory research project: Long Essay
  • Two practice courses in animation:
    • Introduction to the Principles of Animation and
    • Digital Animation
  • One elective course chosen from the Honours courses available in the Digital Arts Division, the Wits School of Arts or with in the Field of Humanities. Your elective course must not clash with the animation practice courses and should be chosen in close consultation with the division.

Interactive Media

The Digital Arts Honours programme in the Interactive Media Specialisation consists of FIVE courses:

  • A compulsory theoretical core course: Digital Art Theory.
  • A compulsory research project: Long Essay
  • Two practice courses in interactive media:
    • World Wide Web as a Creative Medium and
    • Applied Concepts in Interactive Media Practice
  • One elective course chosen from the Honours courses available in the Digital Arts Division, the Wits School of Arts or within the field of Humanities. Your elective course must not clash with the interactive media practice courses and should be chosen in close consultation with the Division.

Game Design

The Game Design Honours programme is geared toward research driven practice. It does not teach programing practice or game design theory in a formal setting, rather you will define your own game related project and create it under supervision. You will be required to link your creative game project to your Long Essay – researching the theoretical framework in the one, and applying it practically in the other. The program is aimed at students with some experience in creating games and programming.  You will be asked to submit a portfolio for consideration for admission to the programme. The portfolio MUST contain a selection of games produced by the applicant as well as a writing sample. If the applicant is interested in taking an Animation course the portfolio should also show a selection of drawings, character designs, or animations.

The Digital Arts Honours programme in the Game Design stream consist of FIVE courses:

  • A compulsory theoretical core course: Digital Art Theory.
  • A compulsory research project: Long Essay
  • Two compulsory Gamed Design courses.
  • Advanced Game Design
  • Game Design Project

One elective course chosen from the Honours courses available in the Digital Arts Division, the Wits School of Arts or with in the Field of Humanities. Your elective course must not clash with the interactive media practice courses and should be chosen in close consultation with the Division.

Admission Requirements for the BA Honours in Digital Art:

  • An appropriate Undergraduate Degree (equivalent to an NQF level 7).
  • Short written motivation as to why you would like to pursue an Honours degree in one of the focus areas, or how and why you would wish to combine areas.
  • A creative portfolio for evaluation. Portfolios must be digital and should consist of work showing skills in either digital design, animation, interactive media or game design.
  • A writing sample – an essay or an academic article written in the last 24 months.
