Liaison Interpreting In Specific Contexts

Interpreters are the link between people who do not speak the same language.

This short course is offered at NQF level 5 to participants who have passed Introduction to Interpreting Skills. Topics covered include conversational interaction and strategies, turn-taking and power relations, stress management, emotional intelligence, conflict management, powerful communication (leading and pacing) and managing interaction with clients in at least two contexts, which may include business, health-care, education and legal interpreting. This course is a must for any interpreter working in stressful situations.

Course Fee

The course costs R11 500.

Classes are subject to a minimum of 8 students. We reserve the right not to run a particular course in an intake if there is insufficient demand. 

Duration

The course is part-time and runs for 8 weeks (40 hours) 

Qualification

Participants who meet all minimum requirements for the course are awarded a certificate of competence.

Programme Overview

Liaison Interpreting in specific contexts is offered as part of the Diploma in Legal interpreting. This course presents learners with a variety of different interpreting settings and equips them with the knowledge of how to perform under the different conditions associated with the various settings. Learners are also shown how to deal with stressful interpreting situations and how to decompress after interpreting at particularly emotional events.

The Diploma in Legal Interpreting, which is accredited by SASSETA, is aimed at upgrading language practitioners’ skills in interpreting and thereby improving their career prospects. Qualifying students who pass the Diploma in Legal Interpreting will be able to apply to enrol in Postgraduate Diploma in Translation or Interpreting at Wits, subject to terms and conditions set by the University Senate.

This course starts on 25 April 2022.

This course is presented in a blended learning format. Class times: 09:00 - 15:30

Entry Requirements

Please ensure you meet the following requirements when applying for the course:

-Grade 12 or equivalent (approved by SAQA).
-Fluent English.
-Fluent in at least one other language.
-Basic computer literacy.
-Successfully completed Introduction to Interpreting skills

Having successfully completed this course provides the skills to work in a variety of basic liaison interpreting settings.
