Speech Pathology and Audiology

Wits Speech Pathology and Audiology at the University of the Witwatersrand is currently celebrating its 80th anniversary. It is the oldest established university facility in the speech-language pathology and audiology in the country.

As of 2018, the previously dual degree has split. We now offer the B(Speech-Language Pathology) and B(Audiology) degrees. Speech Pathology and Audiology is concerned with the processes and disorders of human communication.

Speech Pathology students complete courses which include the study of speech, and language development, speech physiology and perception, the nature of language, speech disorders in children and adults, social and cultural aspects of communication disorders, and the clinical processes involved in identification, prevention, and management of those disorders. Studets are also required to undertake a course in either isiZulu or seSotho. 

Audiology students complete courses on normal hearing, speech acoustics, hearing disorders in children and adults, social, cultural aspects of commuication disorders and the clinical processes involved in the identification, prevention and management of those disorders. Students are also required to undertake a course in South African Sign Language. 

Speech Pathology and Audiology at Wits includes:

  • Training Speech Pathologists and Audiologists at the undergraduate level.
  • Providing postgraduate studies at the Master's level in either Speech Pathology or Audiology by dissertation.
  • PhD supervision.
  • Ongoing research in communication science and on communication pathologies.
  • Provision of speech-language and hearing services to members of the public who experience communication difficulties, and support for their families.
  • Adherence to policies of community engagement and community work.

Wits Speech Pathology and Audiology has an international reputation and a history of excellence in scholarship. It fosters ongoing development of its academic and clinical staff, supports research, rewards publication, and advances the field through published research and professional activity at the local, national, and international levels. Wits Speech Pathology and Audiology also achieves excellence in clinical services which are an example to the region and, through published research, to the world.
