About us

Psychology is one of the University’s three largest departments

The discipline remains a popular choice for students from a variety of faculties including:

  • Humanities
  • Health Sciences
  • Science
  • Engineering
  • Built Environment
  • Commerce, Law and Management

The Department is flourishing and is home to a large and increasingly diverse group of staff and students.

It offers specialist training in all categories recognised by the Professional Board of Psychology and the Health Professions Council of South Africa

  • Annually the Department trains more than 50 professionals at Masters level.
  • Approximately 200 new postgraduate students register every year

History

The Department has not remained untouched by the historical political climate of South Africa  (and there is evidence of research and practice that sought to address many of the ills of Apartheid) and still remains sensitive to the current imperatives of transformation.

The history of the department reflects some major paradigm shifts in the fairly young discipline of psychology.

Goals

To build upon the best of the past

To sustain areas of excellence

To remain contextually sensitive

To continue to be internationally competitive
