Industrial Engineering

Are you considering a career in Industrial Engineering? Doing an Industrial Engineering degree at Wits will equip you with a solid foundation in the science of Engineering with an emphasis on developing analytical techniques and generalised problem solving skills.

What is Industrial Engineering?

Industrial engineering (also referred to as business process engineering) studies the systems, processes, technology and people that make up organisations. Industrial engineers are often involved in the processes behind the scenes which are not so easy to see. For example:

  • How do you ensure that fridges all over South Africa are full of your favourite soft drink?
  • How are car-makers able to make hundreds of different variations of the same vehicle and still produce these economically, driving a new car off the production line every four minutes?
  • How can South Africa streamline public healthcare delivery to ensure quality care to all?
What will you Study?

Doing an Industrial Engineering degree at Wits, equips the student with a solid foundation in the science of Engineering with an emphasis on developing analytical techniques and generalised problem solving skills. The first two years of study are common to the three branches - Mechanical, Industrial and Aeronautical.

From the third year onwards the curriculum becomes more focused on specific Industrial Engineering theories, principles and tools. Typical subjects include Operations Management, Operations Research, Manufacturing Technology, Organisational Behaviour, Materials Science, Mechatronics, Finance and Economics, Systems and Project Engineering, Entrepreneurship and Advanced Maths and Statistics. Wits has a strong history of collaboration with industry and other world class institutions. This enables students to tackle realistic projects within industry from the third year onwards. In final year, the second half of the year is dedicated to project work (design and research). These projects are often industry-related whilst others are at the forefront of the School s research, and frequently lead on to postgraduate study.

Career Prospects

Industrial Engineers are employed in a wide range of organisations. These include manufacturing, project management, management consulting, research, supply chain and logistics, healthcare, mining, fast moving consumer goods, government and banking. Because Industrial Engineers are equipped with a skill set of analytical problem solving and engaging with technology, people and processes, the qualification travels unusually well. Industrial Engineers really can work anywhere.
