Principal Investigator

Professor Gustav Bouwer is the Principal Investigator in the Invertebrate Pathology and Biocontrol Laboratory in the School of Molecular and Cell Biology. He obtained a Ph.D. in Microbiology from Wits and also a B.Sc. and B.Sc. (Hons). Recently the Wits Business School conferred a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) degree to Professor Bouwer. He is Chairperson: Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) Advisory Committee, thus appointed by the Minister of the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, and Member of the National Executive Council for GMOs.

Research focuses on agricultural biotechnology, environmental biotechnology, biological control and invertebrate pathology.

Current research thrusts focus on different aspects of the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis, insect-infecting baculoviruses, plant compounds with pest control activity, and the development of biopesticides (pesticides based on naturally occurring substances or microbes that control pests) for the control of plant pests and disease vectors such as mosquitoes. Molecular biology is an integral part of several of the research projects.
