Study Abroad (Inbound and Outbound)

Explore the World. Expand Your Perspective. Excel Globally.

At Wits, internationalisation is more than mobility; it is a transformative academic and cultural experience. Whether you are joining us from abroad or preparing to study overseas, our exchange programmes are designed to broaden horizons, build global networks and enrich your academic journey.

How do I apply?
  1. Check the relevant exchange partners' website for course availability and selection.
  2. Match the most suitable courses at the collaborating university to your Wits curriculum for the semester you wish to apply for.
  3. Contact the International Students Office (ISO) to express your interest in your preferred host university and request a nomination. Do not contact the host university directly, as nominations must be submitted by the Wits International Students Office.
  4. Complete the Study Abroad Outgoing Application Form.
  5. Contact your learning and teaching advisor or relevant Wits Head of School/Department and request the relevant individual/s to complete the Study Abroad Outgoing Course Selection Form which confirms your course selections at the partner institution and transfer of credits towards your Wits degree, should you pass the courses taken at the collaborating university.
  6. Submit the application form, the Study Abroad Outgoing Course Selection Form and all supporting documentation to the International Students Office. The International Students Office will review the documents and nominate you to the partner institution.
  7. The International Students Office will nominate you to the partner institution.
  8. After your nomination, the host university will provide you with the relevant application information and instructions. You will then be required to complete the application online as instructed.
  9. The host university will assess your application and make the final decision regarding your acceptance as an exchange student.
  10. The host university will issue an Offer Letter/Acceptance Letter or rejection letter.
  11. Contact your Faculty Office to arrange their registration as outgoing exchange students. You will need to liaise with the Faculty Registrar to formalise and confirm your exchange semester\year.
  12. The International Students Office cannot guarantee that all advertised opportunities will be available every semester.

NB:

Until formal written notification is received from the partner university of the success of the application, you should not deregister from any courses or cancel student housing.
