Overview


A candidate for the degree of PhD in Virology conducts research under the guidance of a supervisor/s, which must constitute a substantial contribution to the advancement of knowledge in the field of medical virology.

Curriculum


The Division of Virology at Wits offers a PhD by submission of published work or by submission of a thesis. 

Entry Requirements


  • Master’s degree in Virology/Immunology/Molecular Biology or in any relevant field or equivalent.
  • A letter from applicant’s proposed supervisor confirming willingness and availability to supervise the applicant.
  • Approval letter from the Head of Department confirming that applicant has been accepted in the Division of Virology.

NB. Meeting the minimum entry requirements does not guarantee admission, as final selection depends on the availability of places and academic results.

University Application Process


  • Applications are handled centrally by the Student Enrolment Centre (SEnC). Once your application is complete in terms of requested documentation, your application will be referred to the relevant School for assessment. Click here to see an overview of the Wits applications process.   • Applicants can monitor the progress of their applications via the Self Service Portal.
  • Selections for programmes that have a limited intake but attract a large number of applications may only finalise the application at the end of the application cycle.
