The Division of Virology at the Wits offers a Master of Science in Medicine (MSc Med) by dissertation.

Overview


The field of Virology focuses on the study of viruses and their pathogenesis, the host’s immune response and how this knowledge is applied to develop preventive measures and treatment against viral infections and diseases.

This field addresses viral disease surveillance and response to mitigate the effects of viral epidemics and pandemics for national health security through public health measures. This course will equip candidates with the necessary skills required in the field of diagnostic and research virology.

Entry Requirements


  • A bachelor’s in health sciences degree or a bachelor’s degree in any relevant field or equivalent.
  • Followed by Honours degree with a minimum average of 65% is required for entry.
  • A letter from applicant’s proposed supervisor confirming willingness and availability to supervise the applicant.
  • Approval letter from the Head of Department confirming that applicant has been accepted in the Division of Virology, to pursue the MSc by dissertation.

University Application Process


  • Applications are handled centrally by the Student Enrolment Centre (SEnC).   • Selections for programmes that have a limited intake but attract a large number of applications may only finalise the application at the end of the application cycle.
