Master of Medicine in the field of Virology

Overview


The MMed in Virology intends to impart to the qualifying candidate theoretical knowledge, competence in clinical and laboratory skills and research expertise at the specialist level.

The MMed degree (including the research component), clinical training, and successful completion of the examination of the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa are usually pursued by medical practitioners who wish to qualify as specialists in the field of clinical virology.

  • Practitioners who have successfully registered with the HPCSA as a pathologists in clinical virology usually seek opportunities in the NHLS or in the private sector

Curriculum


The curriculum encompasses virology theory, practical (work-based) training and a research project, aligned with the requirements of the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa.

Entry Requirements


Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a medical practitioner + Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree.

Course Application Process


A limited number of positions are available for Registrars. Applications are not handled through the University application portal. Admission is usually contingent on securing a registrar post with the NHLS.

Positions for posts are advertised on the NHLS website. Please check the NHLS website regularly for updates and follow the application process as outlined for the post. 

An MBChB/MBBCh degree is required for all disciplines, as well as registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Practitioner (Independent Practice).
