Overview


The purpose of the clinical pathology training programme is to produce specialists in the discipline of pathology who have a strong understanding and competency across the pathology disciplines of Chemical Pathology, Haematology, and Medical Microbiology.

Given the context and landscape of the South African healthcare setting, this is considered appropriate and meaningful to address the current shortage in access and availability to specialist pathology services.

Clinical Pathologists in the Public or Private sector on successful completion of the course , CMSA Part II examinations and registration with the HPCSA.

Entry Requirements


  • Requirements as per the Rules and Syllabuses Book will remain unchanged i.s/he is registered as a medical practitioner with the Health Professions Council of South Africa, or s/he has a qualification from another university that would allow the candidate to register as a medical practitioner, or in the case of a foreign graduate wishing to train as a supernumerary registrar, s/he has limited registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa;
  • and ii. s/he is a holder of a training post in one of the teaching hospitals attached to the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University, or in the School of Pathology, or in another
  • institution approved by the Senate and the Health Professions Council of South Africa, subject to the provisions of specific rules for specialties and sub-specialties;
  • and iii. s/he is the holder, of a minimum of two years’ standing, of the degree Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery of this University or of any other university;
  • or iv) is the holder of, either  A. an appropriate degree of Master of Medicine of the University; or B. an appropriate specialist or sub-specialist qualification awarded by one of the Colleges of  Medicine of South Africa, or by an institution recognised by the Senate to be of equivalent standing,
  • and v) s/he accepts the condition that, whether as Registrar or Supernumerary Registrar, s/he may be subject to a period of probation of a maximum of one year and that at the end of this period, the department or division concerned may advise the Senate that the registration of the candidate be cancelled.

Course Application Process


A limited number of positions are available for Registrars. Applications are not handled through the University application portal. Admission is usually contingent on securing a registrar post with the NHLS.

An MBChB/MBBCh degree is required for all disciplines, as well as registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Practitioner (Independent Practice).
