Division of Paediatric Cardiology

We are the Paediatric Cardiology Service for the 3 Academic Hospitals falling under the University of the Witwatersrand providing inpatient and outpatient care to children with heart disease from a wide referral base that includes Southern, Western and Eastern Gauteng including SOWETO, and the North West Province.

We assist in the diagnosis of both congenital and acquired heart disease in foetuses, neonates, children and also adults with congenital heart disease using clinical, echocardiographic, cardiac catheterization, and other additional radiological methods such as Computerized Tomography, and MRI.

Numerous cardiac lesions are treated in the cardiac catheterization theatre such as patent ductus arteriosus, ventricular septal defects, atrial septal defects, coarctation of the aorta, valvar aortic and pulmonary stenosis, and peripheral branch pulmonary stenosis.

Patients needing heart surgery are referred to the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital.
