ARRIVING IN YEOVILLE

These posters originate in a long storytelling process of uncovering Yeoville residents' sense of place: through mapmaking, photography and storytelling which took place over a six months period in 2010, the participants of the Yeoville Stories workshops were asked to identify personal sites of significance in Yeoville.

A set of the photographs taken by the participants was used to create individual “photo-maps” of Yeoville: each participant selected, then incorporated some of the images they had taken into mental maps of Yeoville that linked together, for example, their place of residence, the surrounding public space, places they feared or disliked in the neighbourhood and the places and shops they would patronize on a daily and weekly basis. The participants then shared the story behind their map with the group, adding a verbal layer to the narrative. The discussions and narratives were recorded and transcribed and incorporated into the maps, creating a multi-layered representation of each participant’s own experience of Yeoville, balancing between daily experiences, memories of arrival and hopes and dreams for the neighbourhood.
