Welcome to the University of Witwatersand

For more than a century, Wits has been a place of independent thought, rigorous debate, and academic excellence.

We are shaped by a strong sense of social responsibility and a belief that knowledge should serve society. These values bring us together as we confront the complex challenges facing our country, our continent, and the world.

At Wits, we believe progress is made through questioning, collaboration, and courage. We have helped shape the future before, and we continue to do so, together.

Our mission, vision and values

Mission

Wits exists to advance knowledge that matters. Through rigorous teaching, independent scholarship, and impactful research, we educate critical thinkers who are equipped to engage with complexity and lead with integrity. Our mission is grounded in a commitment to social responsibility, ensuring that the knowledge we create and share contributes meaningfully to society, in South Africa, across the continent, and globally.

Vision

Our vision is to be a leading African university with global influence, recognised for academic excellence, innovation, and public impact. We strive to shape a future that is more just, inclusive, and sustainable, where universities play an active role in addressing the challenges of our time. At Wits, we see higher education as a powerful force for progress, dialogue, and transformation.

Our commitments

For more than a century, the University of the Witwatersrand has been at the forefront of education, research, and social progress in South Africa. Founded in 1922, Wits has grown from a small mining school into a globally recognised institution, shaping minds and challenging ideas along the way. From producing world-class research to nurturing generations of thinkers and activists, the university’s legacy is one of courage, resilience, and a commitment to the public good.
