J o Vearey is an urban public health researcher with an interest in migration and health, social determinants of health, HIV, sex work, and local level responses. She is a Senior Researcher with the African Centre for Migration & Society, University of the Witwatersrand, where she is involved in designing and coordinating research programmes, teaching and supervising graduate students. Jo holds a Senior Fellowship at the Center for Peace, Democracy and Development, McCormack Graduate School of Policy and Global Studies, University of Massachusetts, Boston. In 2012, Jo was rated by the National Research Foundation and in 2014 was awarded a Friedel Sellschop Award from the University of the Witwatersrand, and elected to the South African Young Academy of Science.
