Organisational Unit School of Geosciences

My research areas cover community water supply problems (availability, pollution assessment, management), water quality assessment (chemical, bacteriological, organic) and monitoring, hydrochemical modelling, groundwater flow and transport through heterogeneous aquifer materials, trace metals in groundwater, basin scale water balance, surface and ground water interaction dynamics, aquifer vulnerability to pollution assessment (DRASTIC method) and mapping using GIS, climate change impact study on groundwater, interactions of water contaminants with with aquifers, hard rock and soft rock aquifer characterization, spatial and temporal variability of groundwater recharge, environmental isotopes (Stable and radioactive), numerical groundwater modelling, hydrogeological mapping, lake and wetland hydrology and groundwater management.

I am a GROUNDWATER expert who is devoted to training and research in the broad field of Hydrogeology. I strongly encourage young Africans to specialize in Groundwater Science where the community relies strongly on groundwater for livelihood and commercial purposes. I have more than 25 years of experience in Hydrogeology and trained more than 70 MSC and PhD students. Since Jan 2013, I am a manager of Africa Groundwater Network (AGW-Net).

Books, Journal papers, community awareness

Advocate for an efficient Groundwater management across Africa for sustainable development, Represent Africa on Continental and World level in groundwater related issues. Play a leading role in Groundwater Science and management in South Africa.

I am a professional Natural Scientist (Pr. Sci. Nat) registered in South Africa in 2012. Therefore, I can undertake any type of surface and groundwater related consultancy work.

Athletics, Geological field excursion

My vision for development of excellence in applied aspect in groundwater science stems strongly from my personal approach to learning Earth Sciences. I am passionate in teaching students at all levels not as a means to get a degree but as a means to understand the Earth which they feel strongly and can articulate logically and persuasively.  I teach various geoscience courses since Sept. 1989 and the major part of my teaching duty goes to both for undergraduate and postgraduate students. Hydrogeology is an applied geoscience field which deals with different aspect of groundwater in various geological formations. It is identified as the most difficult courses in geoscience due to the fact that it involves comprehensive application of basic geology, mathematics, physics, chemistry, statistical analysis and microbiology.
