The Wits School of Architecture and Planning (SoAP) is pleased to invite you to a lecture and exhibition opening to close the second semester. The online exhibition features work from across SoAP’s programmes, architecture and planning, and the M.Arch (Professional) projects and Corobrik awards. 

The opening lecture will be presented by Sithabile Mathe, founder of Moralo Designs, Gaborone, Botswana:

What Now? What can students who are about to graduate do next? Historically there has been a strong focus in academic institutions on presenting the traditional role of an Architect and Architectural practice. Is our role in the future to build the skyscrapers that will be published in glossy magazines, or is our role to engage our communities in the design process by using sustainable building methods, and through projects that strengthen local economies and generate health and social benefits for the area and mitigate poverty. Can we do both? This lecture aims to remind of the stereotypical expectations, raise the uncomfortable truths, but also begin to look at the future for practitioners in quite a different light.

Sithabile Mathe has 21 years of post-graduate experience in the built environment working with both design and implementation of projects. She qualified in Architecture in Glasgow, Scotland and in 2006, established Moralo Designs, an Architectural Practice which now offers Urban Design, Architectural Design, Landscape Design, Interior Design and Project Management services. She is registered with four professional bodies and has served as Chairperson of the Architect’s Registration Council of Botswana, as Chairperson of the BHC Board, and as Treasurer on the Architects Association of Botswana Executive Committee. Sithabile is a former Council Member for the Commonwealth Association of Architects (CAA) as Vice President Africa Region and is the current Chair of CAA Validation.
