OVERVIEW

The Wits Fintech Hub (hereafter, the Hub) is a unique space where academia meets industry, bringing together the best of both worlds to drive innovation and advancement in the financial technology space. Our community comprises students, faculty, alumni, and industry experts, all working together to create the future of finance.

Collaborations and partnerships

The Hub has partnered with Liberty Group Ltd to cooperate strategically on Fintech related projects, particularly the establishment of an Incubator Hub, located on the first floor of the Liberty Building in Braamfontein, where individuals can solve real-world problems with a focus on fostering an entrepreneurial spirit and the delivery of tangible commercial or societal benefits. The Hub, in collaboration with the School of Economics and Finance host a Professorial Chair Position in Financial Data Science, funded by the FirstRand Foundation, to pursue leading scholarship in Financial Data Science.

 

Activities of the Hub

Education and training Education and training: In collaboration with the School of Economics and Finance, the Hub is actively involved in training programmes for students, entrepreneurs, and professionals to develop their skills and knowledge in areas such as big data, fintech, and artificial intelligence.
Events and networking We aim to be the leading fintech hub in Africa, fostering a culture of innovation, creativity, and learning. Our vision is to empower the fintech community by providing them with the skills, resources, and opportunities they need to succeed. Through our commitment to education, research, and development, we strive to drive transformative change and shape the future of finance.
Research and development The Hub is actively engaged in the generation of new knowledge through the publication of peer-reviewed journal articles, books, book chapters, and monographs, as well as refereed conference proceedings.
Incubation and acceleration programmes In partnership with our strategic partners, the Hub will offer incubation and acceleration programmes to help early-stage startups grow and scale their businesses. These programmes typically provide mentorship, resources, and access to funding and investors.
Co-working space This is a space where students, researchers, fintech entrepreneurs, and other key stakeholders in the fintech ecosystem can work together and collaborate on their projects.
Partnership and collaboration We facilitate partnerships and collaboration among the student community, alumni, and our strategic partners, including key industry players and other stakeholders in the fintech ecosystem.
