The Materials Physics Research Institute (MPRI) in the School of Physics at Wits offers a range of research programs in Solid State Physics and Materials Science. Each program has its own philosophical approach and focuses on specific interests and activities. Research in Materials Science Physics is based on quantum mechanics and solid-state physics while also incorporating chemical insights to understand and manipulate matter at various scales, from atomic clusters to macroscopic components.
The predominant research method at the Institute is experimental; however, many projects also include significant theoretical considerations or theoretical modelling of experimental results. MPRI members and their collaborators use various research laboratories within the School of Physics. These facilities feature traditional hyperfine interaction techniques, optical and laser techniques, and a state-of-the-art quantum transport facility. Additionally, the Institute has well-established sample synthesis capabilities that utilise thin film and nanomaterial synthesis facilities.
