Oral Pathology

Oral Pathology is one of six dental specialties officially recognised by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and the South African Dental Association (SADA). The specialty deals with the study of diseases of the oral and maxillofacial regions. Its practice in the academic setting includes teaching, research, and diagnosis of disease. The Oral Pathology Department aims to excel in each of these areas and to be at the forefront of cutting edge research with special emphasis on diseases and conditions relevant to the South African and Sub Saharan African setting.

We aim:

  • To provide a comprehensive healthcare service through prompt and accurate diagnosis and subsequent management of oral and maxillofacial disease
  • To deliver undergraduate and postgraduate training programmes of the highest quality
  • To strengthen collaborations with other universities in SA, Sub-Saharan Africa, and the world in general in order to provide a unified and coordinated effort to drive the advancement of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology as a specialty in dentistry and pathology.

The Department of Oral Pathology partakes in the teaching and training of undergraduate and postgraduate students.
