The Wits Young Guns are the new 2025 Varsity Young Guns Champions and team captain, Vuyo Gwiji shared his thoughts on their victory.
The Wits Young Guns displayed a perfect performance in the Varsity Rugby Young Guns Competition, securing the number one spot. The Young Guns showed passion, dedication and tenacity and they fought hard to make their mark in the competition and bring home the trophy. Young Guns team captain Vuyo Gwiji, led his team to victory and shared what their experience in the tournament was like.
The Wits Young Guns made history as the first Wits side to ever take home the trophy making this exciting time to be a part of the competition. Gwiji mentioned that the team took some time to find their feet, but once they began to find common ground, the team started to perform well. “A major challenge that we faced as a team was injuries which resulted in the inconsistency of our Varsity Rugby Young Guns Campaign,” he said. Despite the challenges, the team managed to overcome their difficulties and beat all their opposition.
“My biggest highlight was beating University of Free State in Free State, which many teams found it hard to do and the biggest highlight for the team was being the first ever Wits side to win the competition,” he said. This was a big achievement for Gwiji and his team and one he holds close to his heart.
Winning a tournament of this magnitude is very difficult and it needs the team to be committed and invested in its success. There are many gears that need to turn to make the team successful and that extends to the staff and support system as well. “The coaching and management staff truly played a pivotal role in our successful campaign,” Gwiji shared. The coaching and management staff helped the team prepare for their opposition and understand how best to compete.
The Wits Young Guns achieved stellar results and solidified their position as high-quality competitors in the competition. Their motivation, discipline and great team morale helped to ensure that they found their place and ultimately thrived in the tournament. Gwiji hopes that this victory acts as a momentum booster for the year and the rest of the years to come, and the Wits Sports community hopes to see even more successes in their future.
