Wits students, Suné Liebenberg and Romy Day competed at the 2025 SA National Swimming Competition, a dream that is finally in reach for them
The swimming season has begun and Suné Liebenberg and Romy Day are representing South Africa and Wits University in the best way. Liebenberg and Day are competitive swimmers from Wits who recently competed at the South African National Competition for swimming at the Newton Park Swimming Pool from 9-13 April 2025. In addition to Liebenberg’s exciting feat as a contender on the national stage, she will also be representing the university at USSA Swimming 2025 later this year.
Liebenberg is a fourth-year medical student at Wits who has a lot on her plate as a student, an athlete and the Chairperson of the newly established Competitive Swimming Club at the university. Swimming made a mark on Liebenberg at just 7 years old, when she first took swimming lessons for safety training, but she soon discovered a passion for it, which she has pursued ever since. “God blessed me with incredible talent, and over time, swimming became something I truly love and am committed to,” she said.
Qualifying for the SA National Competition is no easy feat and Liebenberg put a lot of effort into ensuring her spot. To secure a place for herself, she had to swim the required times during the 2024/25 season, which she managed to do, and found herself a spot in the 50m and 100m Backstroke and the 50m and 100m Freestyle. This is a commendable achievement that she can be proud of because it came with tons of determination and hard work. Reaching this level of competition is not possible without preparation, “Preparation has involved a lot of hard work, nine swim sessions and two gym sessions per week,” she shared. These sessions were in conjunction with careful nutrition choices, recovery and mental training.
Liebenberg has high hopes even beyond this competition. “My goal is to continually improve my performances and keep qualifying for national-level events. As a Wits swimmer, I want to contribute to the team’s success and help build a stronger, more competitive swimming culture at the university.”
These goals seem within reach for her, given her immense commitment and talent. The National Competition was a stellar place for her and Day to highlight their skills and set themselves up for successful careers in swimming, and the Wits Sports community wishes them well on this journey.
