Wits Ladies Clinch Bronze at the Varsity Football Women’s Competition

-

The Wits Ladies Football team wrapped up an impressive Varsity Football Women's campaign, securing a third-place finish out of eight teams.

The squad fought tooth and nail for survival and narrowly missed out on a spot in the finals after a loss to the University of the Western Cape. The Ladies made a strong impression at the tournament, showcasing the results of their months of dedication and preparation.

Team captain, Nthabiseng Ramaisa, led the team throughout the campaign and to their exciting third place finish. This tournament meant a great deal to both Ramaisa and her team as it is a chance to put the university on the map as a footballing institution and it could be the deciding factor between them and a place in a topflight football team.

“It was a very exciting experience to be honest, because you get to meet and play with top universities in SA, and top athletes. It is an opportunity for you to showcase your talent with the hope of being scouted by top scouts (Banyana coaches) or even overseas teams,” she said.

The tournament was filled with numerous ups and downs, but the team pulled themselves together and put on their best performances. One of their biggest highlights as a team was when vice-captain, Lusanda Nyathi scored a goal against North-West University in the group stages putting their team in a perfect winning position. She also shared that another exciting moment for her was being named the FNB Player of the Match twice during the group stages. These are just some of the most memorable moments for the team throughout the Varsity Football Women’s campaign.

This experience was filled with bright moments that gave the team the experience and insights they need to prepare them for anything that may lie ahead. Ramaisa shared that she would love to continue in varsity football in whichever way she can, whether it is as a player, a spectator or a staff member. But in the meantime, in her current position as the team captain, she has goals to lead the team to a top spot in the Sasol League and to reach the USSA final at UP-Tuks later this year. These dreams seem closer and closer if the team continues their upward streak with Ramaisa at the helm.
