The Return of Wits in the Varsity Football Men’s Campaign

-

The 2025 Varsity Football campaign has arrived, and the excitement is through the roof!

In the lead up to the exciting campaign, the Wits’ men’s football team has been preparing and ensuring that they are in a stellar condition to mark their place in the competition. The men’s team has not been part of the Varsity Football competition since 2022, making this a great opportunity to make an impact and stake their claim.

Football captain and central midfielder, Kgwadi Molepo, has been tasked with leading the team this year and helping them achieve as many of their goals as possible. Molepo has been trying to ensure that the team is ready and in form for their upcoming games and this exciting moment in their recent history.

“Our goal is to compete at a high level, grow as a team, and ultimately come out on top. We’re aiming to play purposeful football, reach the knockout rounds, and go all the way to win the Varsity Football. More importantly, we want to make a statement, to represent Wits with pride and put the institution where it belongs,” he said.

The team has been dedicated to creating synergy with each other to increase their chances at making it as far as possible in the competition. Their preseason has consisted of friendlies, training sessions and tactical practise sessions to strengthen their skillset ahead of the new season.

Joining the tournament for the first time after a few years is an exciting experience for the squad and a great way to further solidify their experience and improvement. “It’s a great feeling to be part of the tournament again. After being away for a few seasons, this return carries a lot of significance both for us as a team and for the university. There’s a strong sense of anticipation, and we’re ready to give it everything. Against all odds,” Molepo shared.

The transition into the Varsity Football competition this year is a huge leap and does not come without any challenges that the team is prepared to navigate. “Every team comes into the season hungry, so we’re expecting intense matches, physical battles, and challenging away fixtures… That said, we believe in our preparation and more importantly, we believe in each other.”

One of their core intentions this year, apart from progressing in the league, is to maintain their composure and overcome doubt while staying united and strong as a team.

Overall, the Wits men’s football team is prepared to grow and progress throughout the campaign. Molepo is excited to navigate their challenges and lead the team to victory. The team is ready to represent the university, and the Wits community is prepared to support the team in all of their competitive endeavours this season.
