Cricket Report on 2020/21 Season
Covid-19 had a massive impact on the 2020/21 Cricket Season. The Central Gauteng Lions were brave enough to get league cricket going as quickly as possible after lockdown and we managed to get our teams out on to the field under strict Covid-19 Protocols.
The Men’s 1st Team had an excellent campaign considering it was our 2nd year back in the Prem A League. Coming out of lockdown certainly posed its challenges both physically and mentally for the staff and players. The entire team rallied together collectively and set high training standards which showed on the field. The teams’ performances were certainly a direct reflection of the Wits Cricket High Performance Program which has grown from strength to strength over the last three years. Recruitment and a relentless training culture with a strong value system has been the biggest positive to take out of the season. The future looks bright on the Walter Milton Oval.
Men’s Leagues
1st Team finished 3rd in the CGL Prem A League. The team played UJ on the 3rd and 4th playoff and finished the season having only lost one match.
2nd Team topped CGL Presidents A League Pool and narrowly lost their league final vs Delfos CC.
3rd Team played in the CGL Sunday 2 League and finished 3rd in their pool.
4th Team was entered for the first time and narrowly lost the CGL SU4 league final vs Sopranos CC.
Ladies Presidents League
The Wits Cricket Club merged teams for the 2020/21 Season due to limited number of players due to Covid. They had a successful season playing in the CGL Ladies Presidents Team. The Wits Ladies cricket team will play in the Presidents League on their own in the 2021/22 season.
The Bruce Murray Cup and Alumni Cricket
This event was postponed due to Covid-19 and we hope to continue this tradition into the future.
