Wits ready to host epic USSA cricket and football tournaments

Varsity sport is primed to reach its apex when the University Sport SA (USSA) tournaments come to town from 2 to 6 December
Wits University will play host to two sporting codes this year, namely, the National Institutional football and cricket tournaments.
The latter event will be held at the Walter Milton and Education Campus cricket ovals of the Wits University, with St. Stithians College, the University of Johannesburg, Parktown Boys’ High School, and St John’s College as the other venues.
Mark’s Park Sports Club and Wits Sturrock Park will shape up as the venues for the football tournament. Ahead of the respective events, Wits Sport has launched preparations into fifth gear, and will be looking to continue from the success of hosting previous tournaments.
Sports officer for football at Wits, Montsho Matlala, said: “As hosts, we are expecting to provide a world-class tournament with minimal hiccups. And as a football club, we want both teams to qualify for the Varsity Football competition in 2020.”

Matlala added that the institution expects that the football tournament will be the best seen in the history of the University sporting event. “We want this tournament to be one of the best tournaments USSA members have ever witnessed,” said Matlala.
The organisation’s sports officer for cricket, Sharmin Naidoo, said planning for the cricket tournament was moving along swimmingly ahead.
“Planning is well underway. We have great facilities and look forward to a successful week of cricket,” said Naidoo, adding that a trophy in the B Section and qualification for Varsity Cricket for 2020 will be the biggest take-away for the institution. “We have prepared well and are looking forward to reaping the rewards of one years’ worth of hard work and planning.”
