Wits drawn for USSA cricket and football tournaments

- Tshepiso Mametela

Wits are primed for hosting duties when the University Sport SA (USSA) tournaments make a stop at the institution from 2 to 6 December.

The University will play host to the football and cricket tournaments, and will look to make the most of home turf advantage to launch successful campaigns in the respective sections.

In the National Institutional Football Tournament, Wits FC have been drawn in Group B alongside NWU-Vaal, UP-Tuks, UniZulu and MUT. The Wits FC Ladies will contest Group D in the women’s section, and will work hard to keep the honours away from the clutches of TUT, UKZN, NWU-Vaal and Maties. Mark’s Park Sports Club and Wits Sturrock Park will be the venues for what is expected to be a highly-contested football tournament.

On the cricket front, Wits have been drawn in section B1 of Pool B, where they will be pitted alongside Madibaz B, NWU-Vaal and Rhodes University. The cricket tournament will be held at the Walter Milton and Education Campus cricket ovals of the Wits University, with St. Stithians College, the University of Johannesburg, Parktown Boys’ High School, and St John’s College as the other venues.

Tournament organisers foresee a successful tournament, in which they hope the institution will walk away with honours in each of their respective sections, while seeing to an operationally well put together tournament by its ending.
