Every Drop Counts. Every Donation Makes A Difference
On 1 September 2026, the Wits Pathology Students’ Society hosted a thrilling Ice Bucket Challenge at the Health Sciences Campus Quad to raise funds for the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) and bring vital awareness to mental health.
The high-energy fundraising event united staff and students for an unforgettable afternoon. Tickets and donations secured front row seats to watch nominees, Professor Bavesh Kana, Dr. Edgar Phukubje, Dr. Nicholas Bacci, Professor Tanya Augustine, and Dr. Josh Davimes, bravely face the icy splash.
As the main nominee, Professor Bavesh Kana, the Head of School of Pathology set the tone with a heartfelt welcoming speech that reminded attendees of the deeper purpose behind the laughter. While acknowledging his own hesitation, he emphasized the seriousness of the cause:
“Mental health challenges are real. They’re eroding the fabric of our university society. Our students, our academic staff, and our PAS staff face daily challenges that really take a strain on mental health and well-being.” He stated.
His message centred on courage and community, highlighting the bravery it takes to reach out and admit, “I’m not coping.” Professor Kana urged students and staff to seek support through resources such as the CCDU and the Office of Student Success and even offered his own office as a place to talk.
As the buckets of ice-cold water poured over the nominees, the quad erupted in laughter, but beneath it all was a shared understanding of the importance of mental health. The Ice Bucket Challenge was a success not only in raising funds but also in sparking conversations and reminding everyone present that awareness begins with courage, compassion and collective action.
All the proceeds from the fundraising event will go directly towards supporting all the SADAG’s mental health awareness initiatives, ensuring that the impact of this memorable afternoon extends far beyond the splash.
Support for this initiative doesn’t end with one day.
