Site visit to global precast factory for SOCEE 3rd year students

-

Students were able to see a wide range of products being manufactured, including manholes, culverts and other precast concrete elements.

On Tuesday, 18 August 2026, 3rd year students from the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, at University of the Witwatersrand, accompanied by their lecturer, Dr Janina Kanjee got the opportunity to visit Global Precast factory in Pretoria and experience first-hand the full precast concrete manufacturing process.

The Global Precast team welcomed the students to the site, where they had a tour of the site. The tour involved the students observing the different aspects from the preparation and placement of reinforcement steel through to casting and the production of various precast elements.

Students were able to see a wide range of products being manufactured, including manholes, culverts and other precast concrete elements.

Dr Janina Kanjee, lecturer, “Experiences like these are invaluable in connecting engineering theory with real-world design, materials, manufacturing and construction practice.”

A big thank you to Willem-Daniel van Dyk and the entire Global Precast team for generously sharing their time, knowledge and expertise with our students, and for taking us through the manufacturing process in such detail.
