Understanding SA's climate obligations in relation to changing policy in the USA
- Wits University
The country’s moral compass and economic needs were in the spotlight at an annual symposium focusing on the climate crisis.
Wits Philosopher Prof. Lucy Allais, delivered the keynote address at the 2025 Wits Inter-Faculty Symposium on Climate, Sustainability and Inequality, in which she examined the country’s obligations in light of shifting U.S. policy. She argued that while there's uncertainty over major polluters, South Africa cannot defer action, calling for a path that embraces responsibility and protects vulnerable communities.
The 2025 gathering showcased research across themes ranging from climate transitions and conservation to water security, public health, and food-energy systems, offering critical reflections on justice and knowledge in the global South. The annual symposium is hosted by Prof. Imraan Valodia, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Climate, Sustainability and Inequality at Wits University. View the speaker list and research papers.
