AGTRU

The Antiviral Gene Therapy Research Unit (AGTRU) is dedicated to driving molecular technologies from discovery to clinical application, advancing innovation through intellectual property (IP) generation, and fostering the next generation of scientific leaders. With strong support from South African and international funding agencies, our research addresses critical challenges in biomedical science and healthcare in general.

Patrick Arbuthnot

SENIOR MEMBER: Professor Arbuthnot forms part of the IDORI Advisory Committee. After working in Paris to investigate the development of gene therapy for treatment of liver cancer and HBV Infections; he then established and directed the Antiviral Gene Therapy Research Unit (AGTRU) at Wits University.

SENIOR MEMBER: Prof Ely completed his PhD at AGTRU where he worked on mRNA technologies for vaccine

Betty Maepa

SENIOR MEMBER: Prof Maepa is an Associate Professor at AGTRU focusing on anti-MBT treatment

SENIOR MEMBER: Dr Bloom focuses on developing anti-HBV therapies at AGTRU

MID-CAREER MEMBER: Dr Naidoo leads the C1 platform to develop therapeutic proteins and vaccine
