Race, inequity and mental health in the time of Covid 19 : benefits and lessons from mixed methods approaches in the United Kingdom

The Wits School of Public Health cordially invite you to attend Professor Aubrey Sheiham and Dr Molefi Sefularo 2022 lecture.

Guest speaker Professor Stefani Hatch, co-leader of the Marginalised Communities and Mental Health programme within the ESRC Centre for Society and Mental Health as well as co-leader of the development of the Health and Social Equity Collective, funded by King’s College London and Impact on Urban Health. Hatch has over 25 years of experience delivering interdisciplinary health inequalities research with an emphasis on race at the intersection of other social identities. Professor Hatch leads the Tackling Inequalities and Discrimination Experiences in Health Services (TIDES) study, funded by a Wellcome Trust Investigator’s Award, that was expanded in 2020 with Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) funding as part of the UK Research and Innovation’s (UKRI) rapid response to COVID-19, with an aim to identify and mitigate the impact of the pandemic on racial and ethnic inequalities experienced by health and social care staff.

Professor Hatch’s talk will be followed by a discussion with Professor Mary-Ann Davies. Davies is a Public Health Medicine Specialist in the Western Cape Department of Health, responsible for Epidemiology and Surveillance, and Director of the Centre for Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Research (CIDER) at the University of Cape Town. She leads several HIV cohort research projects to address key policy and implementation questions and was extensively involved in the Western Cape COVID-19 response. Mary-Ann will give the South African perspective.
