MOCAM Seminar Series
The Modelling, Computational and Applied Mathematics (MOCAM) seminar series is a regular hybrid event hosted by the School of Computer Science and Applied Mathematics (CSAM) at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.
Guided by a multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary research ethos, MOCAM provides a vibrant platform for exploring mathematical approaches to both emerging and longstanding societal challenges. Seminar presentations address globally relevant themes such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), and the transformative power of Big Data.
MOCAM’s research focus lies at the intersection of mathematical modelling and real-world phenomena—spanning natural, engineering, and social processes. The series draws from a broad spectrum of specializations in mathematical analysis, including dynamical systems, ordinary and partial differential equations, optimization, optimal control, numerical analysis, and scientific computing.
In addition to its regular seminars, MOCAM features two flagship events:
- Mid-day Mathematical Modelling (MMM) Workshop: Held annually, this workshop invites established speakers to mark the culmination of MOCAM’s yearly activities through focused discussions and collaborative exploration.
- Joint WITS–UDs–UNIKIN Seminar: Hosted on a rotating basis by CSAM (University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa), the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Dschang-UDs (Cameroon), and the Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science at the University of Kinshasa-UNIKIN (DR Congo), this monthly seminar reflects a formal partnership and fosters cross-border academic exchange.
Through these initiatives, MOCAM cultivates a dynamic intellectual community committed to advancing mathematical insight and its application to the world’s most pressing problems.
