  • The Wits University Mountain Club is dedicated to all forms of rock climbing, mountaineering and a love of the outdoors. Climbing can be a relaxed sociable escape from big city living as well as an athletic pursuit for those who wish to push themselves physically and mentally.
  • Our new 8m wall in the Old Mutual Sports Hall is a great training venue, allowing us to host many events throughout the year including the National Boulder League, USSA Lead Climbing and Bouldering competitions, Gauteng Climbing competitions as well as the Wits Internal Boulder League.
  • Our club room, affectionately known as "The Cave", is located on the eastern side of Flower Hall, facing the Chamber of Mines building and has shorter over-hanging climbing walls as well as a complete roof system on a low ceiling.
  • Other than training, the Cave is a place where members come to relax, peruse old climbing magazines and plan their next outdoor trip. Wits host multiple trips to Waterval Boven every year as well as trips to Harrismith, Swinburne, Magaliesberg, Drakensberg and Rocklands in the Western Cape.
  • Day trips to Bronkhorstspruit, Chosspile, Kingskloof and other climbing areas closer to Wits are also frequented, ensuring that Wits climbers have ample opportunity to hone their skills. We are always looking for new members to join and have dedicated beginner training evenings where we teach basic techniques and all the necessary procedures to be safe while climbing.

Rock Climbing Practices are offered from 17:30 to 19:30 on Mondays in OMSH and Wednesdays in the Cave.

Core training, and general exercises, are also offered most weeks from 7:00 to 7:45 on alternating days.

Wits Mountain Club registration fee for 2019 is R500 for students and staff and R650 for Alumni
