“Gaps in support for people exposed to the suicidal thoughts and behaviours of others”

Exposure to the suicidal thoughts and behaviours of others is a significant public health concern that raises the risk of suicide among those exposed. Yet not much is known about how common such exposure is, or whether those affected can access mental healthcare.

Lifetime exposure to the suicidal thoughts and behaviours of others is common in all four countries, ranging from 62% in Ghana to 86% in South Africa. Yet only between a fifth and a third of those exposed have received mental healthcare. Unmet need is high, especially in Ghana and South Africa. Expanding mental healthcare and wider support for people exposed to the suicidal thoughts and behaviours of others should be a shared global priority.
